PROGRESS REPORT 9

MY UIR JOURNEY

Looks like it have come to the end

of my UIR Journey. I must say

the experience has been splendid as

I was able to learn things taught outside

the "Proper Classroom" situation. With the

expertise of the teacher, Ms Faridah we

managed to learn namely to basics of using

different search facilities, how to cite a

resource, the criteria of evaluting a

source as well as identifying if the

source comes from an organisation or

is it a personal blog including many more.

UIR really helped me especially

during projects when I needed to

look for relevant information. I just

needed to list out the keywords and the

variations to the keywords then

come up with a search query.

And walla, there I have my

results when I type the search query

into the search field.

So all in all, I have taken alot

from this CDS subject and

specially thank the teacher who

was so patient in teaching us

the concepts and basics of all

of the above.

So it's time for so long :(

PROGRESS REPORT 8

PRACTICAL 8

So for practical 8, we were asked

to visit http://www.talkingcock.com/

where we were tasked to evaluate the

website and to justify based on

our opinion if the site is

sustainable.

I felt that the website was rather

irrelevant as their main focus

was to poke fun of mainly the

Singapore government, Singaporeans

as well as other situations that

they feel is worth making fun of.

For Example, they even went to the

extent to create a number of games

revolving around the escaped JI

terrorist namely Mas Selamat. Though

I must admit it was quite addicting, haha.

In addition, relating to our practical if I

was Singapore's Prime Minister and saw

this website I would definitely flip or feel

disappointed that someone who is

a Singaporean himself/ herself will

even do such a thing. Maybe I

would slap the person with a fine

OR put him in PRISON hahaha I

don't know I'm the Prime Minister what,

I can do anything.

And so, if I was a Singaporean I would

have a laugh about it. I mean you

can't stop these

people why not join in the fun

with them right? At the same time,

I still feel a little disappointed as

this is our country, Singapore we

are talking about where we are

safe in the sheltering walls of this

small island, where we are being taken

care of by the government, and where

we enjoy peace and harmony together.

The place I would like

to call HOME.

Lastly, if I was a foreigner, I would feel

puzzled as to why a Singaporean

is making fun of their own

country. I would laugh at them

and think that they are LOSERS.haha

In conclusion, this lesson was

really entertaining. With this

I end my report.

PROGRESS REPORT 7

So it was E-learning last week. YEAH!

However, my joy didn't last long as we still

had to do some online work plus

we had to blog about

the experience.

THE WIKI EXPERIENCE

Alright so we had to do up our Wiki using

Wetpaint where we had to summarize

a resource relating to our research topic.

I felt that doing this activity was really

enriching as I found out many

more facts about breast cancer research.

Furthermore, though there still isn't

a cure for breast cancer I found there were a

number of treatments that could help reduce

the risks of breast cancer.

Adding on to that I also managed to

chance upon the ways in which to

prevent breast cancer from occurring.

For Example, indulging oneself in

physical activity as well as having a good

intake of Vitamin D would also help.

Therefore, I would say that I had an

enriching experience where I had the

privilege to widen my knowledge on the

breast cancer reserach subject.

Not to mention it also helped me build up

my portfiolio which is also one of the criteria

required for submission.

Adios.

PROGRESS REPORT 6

So it's me again :)

PRACTICAL 6

So very simply we were asked to

do Practical 6a & b where we're

suppose to comment on a website

that we have found during the previous lab

in Practical 4&5.

Based on Lecture 7 we are tasked to

evaluate the website we have found based on:

Firstly, the Purpose of the website -

who is the site intended for?

Secondly, Coverage - what is the

website's coverage on? Thirdly, Authority -

the reputation of the author.

Next Accuracy - Is the site accurate,

the related links accurate?

Moving on, Currency - How current is

the materials, is it recent?

Also, Accessibility of the

website - Is it accessible to non-members?

Next, Presentation & Arrangement -

How the presentation of the words/ pictures,

are the advertisements appropriate?

Lastly, Usability - Is the website

easy to use, easy to navigate?

Overall, I did learned alot

from the above Practical and found it

useful as well. Oh did i mention

that we are having E-Learning

this week, where each member is

suppose to contribute information

to their wiki which we have created last friday.

So till then.

PROGRESS REPORT 5

My Dream Holiday

would be in PARIS (pronounced as Pah-ree).

The city stimulates the senses, demanding to

be seen, heard, touched, tasted and smelt.

Arc de Triomphe

Gaze rapturously at its breezy boulevards,
impressive monuments, great works of art

and magic lights. Savour its gourmet selection

of cheese, chocolate, wine and seafood.
Feel the wind in your face as you rollerblade

through Bastille, or a frisson of fear

and pleasure atop the Eiffel Tower.

The Eiffel Tower

Palais de Luxembourg

Some may ask why Paris?

Simple, the historical monuments

and statues is simply the most

magnificent sight.

There are numerous iconic landmarks

among its many attractions, along with world

famous institutions and popular parks.

With all the beautiful things you

get to see, I doubt anyone will

be bored at all.
What's more, Paris is such a romantic city

ideal for some love-ing with a loved one.

Paris beautful by name, beautiful by nature.

P.S. Donc viendriez-vous me rejoignent

pour mon jour férié de rêve ?

PROGRESS REPORT 4

Hey gwen reporting for homework again:)

PRACTICAL 4 & 5
So for practical 4&5 we were
tasked to search more on each of
our research topic using a search
engine, a meta search engine and a
subject directory. Furthermore, we
were taught how to use the

AND and OR operators.
(E.g. (progress OR state*) AND
(breast OR bosom*) AND cancer
AND (investigation OR research*))

Search Engine
For the search engine I used
http://www.google.com/
to search on the above keywords
used. The results returned was
countless but still relating to the
keywords I searched on.

Meta Search Engine
For the meta search engine I used
http://www.metacrawler.com/
The results returned was more
focused and accurate as it was
searched from various search engines
as well. Lastly, the number of results
provided by metacrawler was much lesser
as compared to the results produced by a
search engine.

Subject Directory
For the subject directory I used
http://sg.search.yahoo.com/dir
The results shown was more than
the results produced using a meta
search engine. Albeit more but I
felt the the outcome of the websites
produced were more relevant

to my research.

So later on we were tasked to take screen
shots of the different search facilities
and comment on the differences between
the 3 search facilities taking to point also
their features as well. I felt that the
practical help guided us in finishing our
practical, leading to ensure the build up of
our portfolio which is to be submitted

in week 6.

So till then. Adios :)

PROGRESS REPORT 3

So it was E-Learning for practical 3.
We were tasked to do tutorial 1 & 2
as well as practical 3.

Tutorial 1 & 2
For Tutorial 1 & 2 we were supposed to
firstly relate our views on how the
Internet has enriched our lives
academically and secondly discuss
why is there a need for "advocacy"
websites. It was really enriching and
interesting as we get to post our own
personal views on the subject as well as
having the privilege to comment on
our fellow classmate's posts.This helps
us to know one another better and gets us
engaged in a common topic.

PRACTICAL 3
As for Practical 3, it is known that our tasks
was to differentiate between 4 resources if
they were either Information, Advocacy,
Business/ Marketing, News, Personal or
Entertainment. Furthermore, we were
asked to imagine that we had $500, what
were the items we were going to buy?
This activity was exceptionally enjoyable
as there were no boundaries as to what
we could or could not buy. However, the
word "IMAGINE" was such a killjoy - we
couldn't shop for real. BOOHOO!
And lastly we had to include two classmate's
blogs as site feed in our blog links.

To sum up, i would say the experience was
a fruitful and gratifying one. We should have
more of such E-Learning :)

P.S. Could we have real money
to spend next time *winks*?

PROGRESS REPORT 1

Greetings Earthlings!

Here's Gwen reporting for homework!

ALL ABOUT ME.
I'm currently in my 3rd Year studying
the Diploma in Information Technology.

I'm a Singaporean and i live in Simei.

I have an eldest sister and twin sister,

both are currently studying in Perth right now.

I miss them!HAHAH.

So my two favourite websites are

http://www.surfthechannel.com &

http://www.hollywoodgossip.com

Shall get down to business right now:
Basically after attending 2 sessions of UIR
i've come to realise that the subject is kinda
interesting, not forgetting that it's seriously an
idiot proof cds. So what have i learnt so far?

PRACTICAL 1 & 2.
In Practical 1, I've learned how to use a search
engine to source for an online forum, a
organisational website and an electronic journal
website simply by typing the specific keywords.
Adding on to that, I too have gained

the knowledge of what an online forum

is,a organizational website and

an electronic journal site.

Moving on to Practical 2, time to create our

blogs, hence this beautiful blog right now,

decided to name it gwen's escapade

cause it is the criteria to blog weekly in

order to pass this subject so i realised

that the blog will be my escape
from books and other killjoys

like projects/assigments :(
Therefore, gwensescapade evolved. TA-DAH!
So getting back to where i was practical 2

i learned how to cite the resources,

pretty hard i feel.
Furthermore, i also learned about

the differences between an

organizational and a personal website
(E.g. Organizational - Managed by an

organization, info on topic

is extensive BLAH..)
The most fun part was creating of the blogs,
albeit the signing up was time consuming.

So here are the links to the resources

BLOG

ORGANISATION

So with this, I hereby end my report.
xoxo
